Symmetrical 'vasogenic' brain oedema.

چکیده
Low attenuation of the cerebral white matter occurs with oedema and demyelination. When unilateral or asymmetrical it is usually due to a tumour, granuloma or abscess. The nidus responsible for the vasogenic oedema can be demonstrated after contrast enhancement. Bilateral demyelination occurs especially with viral infections such as herpes simplex encephalitis and progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy but produces asymmetrical low attenuation of the deep white matter even though temporal lobes are frequently involved.

Scalp acupuncture effects of stroke studied with magnetic resonance imaging: different actions in the two stroke model rats.
BACKGROUND Scalp acupuncture (SA) therapy on strokes has been empirically established and widely used in clinics in China. The evidence from clinical studies suggests that SA produces significant benefits for some patients with stroke. METHODS The effect of scalp acupuncture was studied using MRI for two different stroke models: spontaneously hypertensive stroke-prone (SHR-SP) rats and rats w...
متن کاملDiffusion changes suggesting predominant vasogenic oedema during partial status epilepticus
Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) has demonstrated a focal area of cytotoxic oedema during partial status epilepticus (PSE). However, vasogenic oedema related to the breakdown of the blood-brain-barrier (BBB) and ictal hyperperfusion could be the predominant DWI findings in the epileptogenic area during PSE. We report a case of PSE with ictal aphasia, right hemiparesis, and repetitive focal moto...
متن کاملMathematical modelling of blood-brain barrier failure and oedema.
Injuries such as traumatic brain injury and stroke can result in increased blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability. This increase may lead to water accumulation in the brain tissue resulting in vasogenic oedema. Although the initial injury may be localized, the resulting oedema causes mechanical damage and compression of the vasculature beyond the original injury site. We employ a biphasic mixtu...
متن کاملEstimated Specific Gravity with Quantitative CT Scan in Traumatic Brain Injury
An uncontrolled increase in intracranial pressure (ICP), often due to cerebral oedema, is the most common cause of death in traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. Different types of oedema coexist in TBI patients: vasogenic oedema and cytotoxic oedema. Vasogenic oedema occurs with the extravasation of fluid into the extracellular space following blood brain barrier (BBB) disruption. Cytotoxic o...
متن کاملThe many faces of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome.
The classic imaging findings of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) are of bilateral parietal and occipital subcortical vasogenic oedema, and are well established in the literature. As experience with PRES grows, varied and atypical presentations are being increasingly described. This pictorial review illustrates the variable presentations of PRES, including cases with atypical ...
